Walking in Colonial Rangoon (Yangon)

Service description:

We invite you for a walking tour around Colonial Rangoon – a unique town in South-Eastern Asia that has kept its authentic style in architecture and citizens’ lifestyle.
Yangon has better than any other megapolis of this region managed to keep its unique look of the British colonial town.
What helped greatly to keep such authencity is that in the middle of the 19th century Yangon had been rebuilt according to the agreed plan, which contained clear parallel-perpendicular districts, brick- and stone- built, all having a unified European architectural style, reflecting the latest knowledge about the Yangon’s architectural style in the colonial times.
These ancient colonial districts have been kept untouched up to modern times, as Birma / Myanmar has been in isolation for the past decades of the 20-th century, without any major city reconstruction activities. This way, today Yangon downtown is the only unique “living museum” of the colonial architecture, stretching for over 10 km along the river Yangon.
Despite the ancient age, these districts are not abandoned – in fact they are inhabited by local Yangon people, so a traveler can learn about traditional Yangonian lifestyle, very special and authentic, just by walking along the old buildings.
The main objective of a walking tour around the old colonial Yangon is to learn about the most interesting historical sights of the town, situated within walking distance from each other.
And the ultimate goal of such tour is to give a traveler brief details about each sight, so that he could return on his own to any of the sights he was interested in the most, after the introduction walk had been over.
That’s why it makes the most sense to go for such walking tour during a traveler’s first day in Yangon. In addition, he will get to know an extremely interesting history of the town, that accounts for more than 2 500 years.
Naturally, brief sights and monuments description during the walking tour won’t replace an extended touristic walking trip with a guide who has profound knowledge of Yangon’s history, and has skills to tell about each sight and monument in an interesting, involving way.
We can offer such guide for any touristic group. We are also interested to include this touristic route in tourist guides for travelers, coming to Myanmar.

The best time to start a walking tour is around 9 – 10 in the morning (not hot yet). Estimate tour duration is 4 – 5 hours, 7 km length.
